How to Maintain Your New Windows and Doors

New windows and doors are a real investment in your home. A little care keeps them working smooth, sealing tight, and looking good for years. The good news is that modern windows and doors need very little upkeep. Here is what to do.

Clean the glass and frames

Wipe the glass with a soft cloth and a mild cleaner a few times a year. For vinyl frames, mild soap and water is all you need. Skip harsh scrubbers that can scratch the surface.

Keep the tracks and weep holes clear

Dirt builds up in window and sliding-door tracks over time. Vacuum them out and wipe them down so the windows glide and seal right. Many windows have small weep holes at the bottom that let water drain. Keep those clear so water does not pool.

Check the seals and weatherstripping

Once a year, look over the weatherstripping around your windows and doors. If you feel a draft or see a gap, the strip may need to be replaced. This small fix protects your energy savings.

Lubricate the moving parts

A little silicone spray on hinges, locks, and rollers keeps doors and windows opening smooth. Avoid oil-based sprays that attract dirt.

Look after your doors

Wipe down the door surfaces and check the threshold and seals. If you have a wood door, keep up with the paint or finish to protect it from our humid weather.
